But as the centuries passed and the fields of England were swallowed up by the industries of war, their ties to the chalk, flint, and clay of the land began to fade. Though still of use in the munitions factories and on the battlefield, each passing generation of giant is born diminished. Culled to manageable levels, tamed, and cowed, the effects of inbreeding are apparent to all. Bones creak under the weight of the bodies they carry even before the gruelling work that earns them a stay of execution, and what language and culture they may once have had they dare not utter for fear of being branded ungodly. In the theatre of war, these stunted giants serve as little more than mobile weapons platforms, propped up and braced to carry armaments too heavy for the sucking mud, not led towards the enemy, but herded."
