He’d enlisted to fight the demons. He’d seen the refugees pouring in from the villages and he’d known that was the right thing to do. Even now, he’d fight a demon with nothing but a rock if he had to, with his bare hands, with his teeth. The trenches though, this wasn’t fighting. Stinking of death and offal. The screams of the wounded abandoned in no man’s land haunting every moment of the day and night. The rats nibbling on you every time you finally managed to sleep. All so the idiot son of some lord or another could add another star to his shoulder. The last time his unit had rotated, he’d just hopped off the transport. Three glorious days of freedom. He hadn’t seen a rat or a corpse the whole time. Even before the transformation, the man who became Evaristus had been reserved, speaking only when needed. His actions had done the talking then, as they do now. His unwavering service, the confidence in which he had always done exactly the thing he knew he should. There was no ego in it, no glancing about to see if others had noted his piety or approved of his sacrifice. To call his devotion “resolve” would do it a disservice, as it would imply that Evarstus had ever even considered an alternative to righteousness.To know him was to be in awe of that devotion. It was plain to see why he was chosen, blessed, exalted. No madness could never win against such a mind. No corruption could possibly gain purchase on the tempered steel finish of his certainty. Shocktrooper with Drum SMG - Most of the wounded were happy to be sent home. They'd served their time at the front and could return to the safety of the walled cities with a chest pinned with medals and shrapnel. Some might even sport a distinguished limp or rakish eye patch to impress the folks at home. But McCreedyloved it too much. A day without a battle was a wasted day in his eyes. The men say he bribed the medical inspector and threatened the life of a clerk in order to get sent back to the trenches. Combat Medic with Misericordia and Grenades - As the transport rounded the bend, headed out to reinforce the troops already entrenched near the river, the tire slid into a pothole and the soldier was jostled awake. Half-awake, through the reinforced glass he caught a glimpse of the combat medic. She stood alone, eyes alert and searching. Eyes both compassionate and cautious. Confidence without arrogance. He’d barely spoken a word to her, though her brother was in his platoon. He’d heard the stories about Randalf of course. How she’d beaten the Lieutenant in a training duel. How she’d faced down a preator on the field. How she’d saved Frank’s arm with nothing but gunpowder and a dishrag. “Those eyes . . .” he thought, “Someday I’m going to marry a girl with eyes like that.” Sadly, like so many others, the young soldier never left those trenches. Shocktrooper with Rocket-Propelled Grenade - Happiness has started to feel selfish. With so many others in pain. With the wars making it impossible to meet even their most basic needs. Warton has never been selfish. Warton is never what you or I would call happy. Sniper Priest with Sniper RIfle - Elias had a troubled youth. So much anger. So much pride. The service channelled that anger. The cloth focused his pride. He was a terror on the battlefield. A force of nature. An act of God. Eventually he found his way to peace, to humility. Somehow his path has led him back to the trenches. He seeks no glory now, and neither those he saves nor those he sends to the pit ever know that their deliverance or judgement came at his steady hands.
