A great many animals serve in the trenches alongside the soldiers. Wardogs are by far the most common, but tame ocelots, barbary apes, small bears, and other

Alongside the men of the Trench Cossacks walk creatures no less loyal, no less tested by war. The trench dogs are not mascots nor simple beasts, but trained companions shaped by mud, fire, and duty. They move through shell holes and wire with instincts honed by countless nights at the front, answering not to whistles alone, but to the unspoken rhythm of the line.

The great grey guardian wears a strict collar and stands watch where sentries grow weary. Broad-backed and unyielding, he plants himself at dugout mouths and trench turns, teeth bared not in rage but resolve. Enemy scouts learn quickly that silence does not belong to them alone. When the guardian dog growls, the line holds.

Smaller, faster dogs serve another purpose. They slip through fire and smoke carrying ammunition, bandages, or a single vial of hope to where a man lies bleeding and unseen. Many owe their lives to the sudden appearance of a panting messenger with mud-caked paws and clear eyes that refuse to panic.

Above them all stands the Ukrainian Shepherd — watchful, intelligent, and relentless. Bred for open fields but forged in trenches, it reads the battlefield as a map of threats and paths. Where the Shepherd moves, men follow with greater confidence, knowing that no movement goes unnoticed and no approach unchallenged.

In the trenches, dogs do not ask why they serve. They simply do. And when the guns fall silent, their loyalty remains, standing guard over those who can no longer stand for themselves.

Even the vilest heretics of the legions can keep pets—though these beasts are hardened and savage, scarred by barbed wire and branded with infernal glyphs. When they are not advancing alongside their masters, these packs of war mastiffs and dogos swirl through the mud of no man’s land, tearing at the heels of fleeing captives and stalking the shattered ruins of trenchworks. Their glowing, soulless eyes scan the darkness for any sign of life; their blood-curdling howls echo across the battlefield, breaking the resolve of even the steeliest warriors. Fully trained in obedience to blasphemous rites, they are unleashed at dusk to hunt down deserters, guard the heretic shrines, or simply spread terror among the faithful.

Cheetah Auxiliary Corps In the far-flung colonies of the Abyssinian Empire, not all who serve march on two legs. Swift, disciplined, and deadly, they are chosen not for spectacle but for utility — each cheetah bred and trained to answer a soldier’s command as surely as any brother-in-arms. Their roles are varied: some are simple war-cheetahs, used to harry enemies and scout ahead; others serve as guard-beasts, trained to protect standards and officers; a rare few are fitted with medic’s satchels, racing through fire and smoke to deliver bandages and water to the wounded. Though not considered soldiers in the strictest sense, their presence is a mark of the empire’s reach — proof that even the wild speed of Africa bends to Abyssinian discipline.
